The Kentigern Way

Following the Saint's journey from Hoddom to Glasgow

Peebles to Biggar

19 mile (30 km) OS Landranger 72

The walk continues at Bank House (once a Buchan family home), at the far west end of Peebles High Street.
Map Peebles to Biggar

Turn left to cross the bridge back over the Tweed and keeping on the right-hand side, head uphill, straight ahead on an alleyway between houses on a well waymarked route. At a fork in the path head directly up over Cademuir Hill with its ruins of iron-age hill forts and commanding views over the Manor and Tweed valleys.

At the fort the route leads down a clear path to join a minor road about a kilometer short of the bridge over the Manor Water. Cross the river here and follow the John Buchan Way signs leading over open ground to Stobo.

For those wishing to continue directly onto the John Buchan Way missing out the detour into Peebles, Glen Road and Springhill Road can be followed to pick up the John Buchan Way at the bridge over the Tweed where it leads out of the town centre.

The route drops down to re-cross the Tweed and continues over open ground to Stobo and Stobo Kirk which Kentigern frequented and reputedly where he met with Merlyn. (A few km down the road, but off our route, is Drumelzier and Merlyn's Grave.)

Just beyond Stobo Kirk our route wends its way delightfully through the hills of the Broughton Heights and eventually down to the village of Broughton. Head south along the A701 through the village to arrive at the Brewery and the start of the Biggar Water bridle path which leads along an old abandoned railway causeway directly into the town of Biggar with its ancient Kirk.
